The African elephant has 2 subspecies.

The Savannas African Elephant or The Bush African Elephant
The Savannas African Elephant is the world's biggest land animal. It is approximately 7 - 8.8 meters long from the end of tail to the end of trunk. It weighs about 7,000 kilograms and it is approximately 4 meters tall. There are 2 pointed lobes at the tip of its trunk. The African elephant's forehead is smaller compared to its Asian cousin's narrow and one lobed head. It has noticeably bigger ears widely spreaded when angry the upper edges set higher than its forehead. The habitat of the African elephant covers the continent of Africa, especially the part below the Sahara Desert. It can mate from 8 - 13 years of age. The pregnancy will last 18 - 22 months. The newborn weighs 75 - 115 kilograms and its height is approximately 100 meters. It needs up to 75 - 150 kilograms of food and it drinks about 80 - 160 liters of water per day. Acacia is a favorite food.

 
     
 

The Forest Africana Elephant
Its appearances are alike to The Savannas African Elephant but there are a few differences. Its size is smaller than The Savannas African Elephant's. Its ears are smaller and more circular than The Savannas African Elephant's and its tusk is taperer and straighter. The female elephant weighs approximately 2,000 kilograms and its height is 3 meters. The male is a bit bigger than the female. The habitat of the Forest Africana Elephant covers the continent of Central and Western Africa. It can begin to mate at 8 - 11 years of age. The pregnancy will last approximately 18 - 22 months. A newborn is about 50 - 100 grams of weight and about 80 - 100 centimeters tall. It needs up to 60 - 120 kilograms of diet and it drinks 60 - 120 litters of water per day. Fodder, leaves and root are favorite food.

Elephas maximus maximus
Elephas maximus maximus is the biggest elephant in this species. Its skin is a dark color. Its ears are big. The spreading of pixel is abundant in the base of the ear, face, trunk and body. The origin is in Srilunka. There are this species in abundance at Srilanka and south India.

 
     
 

Elephas maximus indicus
Elephas maximus indicus is smaller than the first one. The origin is in Srilanka. There are this species in abundance in Thailand, Burma, Laos, Vietnam, Combodia and China.

 
     
 

Elephas maximus sumatrnus
Elephas maximus sumatrnus is the smallest elephant in this species. Its skin is a bright color. The origin is in Sumartra. There are this species in abundance in Malaysia and Sumartra.

 
     
 

Normally, Asian elephant live in the forest of Thailand, Burma, Laos, Combodia, Srilanka, India, Indonesia and Malaysia. Its average height is approximately 3 meters. Looking at the head of an Asian elephant, two lobes on its forehead will be clearly discerned.
