A message which
appeared on the first
Sukhothai stone inscription
provides evidence to show
that as far back as the
Sukhothai period, when
King Ramkhamhang the Great
fought on elephant back,
elephants were our comrades
on the battlefield and
in victory over Khun Sam
Chon. Also discovered
on the third section of
the same stone is a depiction
of King Ramkhamhang decorating
his white elephant and
riding on it, leading
his people to make merit
at the temples in Arunyik.
In war and in peace, elephants
have symbolized Sukhothai
ever since. |
