Thailand's warm climate is conducive to a staggering abundance of wildlife, but the distinctive relationship between man and elephant here is unmatched in its qualities of commitment, mutual reliance and faith. In Thailand, the elephant is esteemed above all other animals. Elephants have played an important role in the country since its inception, in the institutions of the nation, in its religion and in the monarchy. The expertise with which Thai  mahouts have cared for their elephants since ancient times has earned them an international reputation as some of the best in the world. Mahouts working at big zoos overseas often come from Thailand. Old or sick elephants here benefit from a unique combination of traditional wisdom and modern medicine, the best of both worlds, and Thailand will play an important role in preserving the elephant for future generations.
