This is a joint project of the royal household, the Third Division Army, Lampang and Lamphun Provinces, the Royal Forest Department, the World Wildlife Fund and the Smithsonian Institution.

The target area is the wildlife refuge at Doy Pa Muang, Lampang and Lampang Provinces. In preparing elephants for release, they will have a medical check-up, their vital statistics recorded and a signaling radio collar attached. The elephants will then be taken to the target area, so that they may gradually adapt themselves to life in the Doy Pa Muang Conservation Area and learn how to live in a wild state. Their behavior, their adaptations and their movements will be studied from signals sent by the radio satellite collar, and a follow-up will be made every month. Goals of the project include:

  4. To be a model for long-term survival of small herds in limited areas, separated from other herds.
  5. To increase the number of Asian elephants by natural mating.
  6. To promote cooperation between government agencies and the private sector.
  7. To promote international relationships using elephants as ambassadors.
  8. To conduct research and publish results in educational journals.
  9. To provide this information to Her Majesty the Queen, because Her Royal Highness is extremely interested in this study, and in the survival of the elephants released.
